Aix en Provence
Les Baux de Provence
A half hour's drive from Aix is the village of les Baux de Provence, one of the most beautiful villages in France. Dominating the surrounding Provençale hills, it was once the home of the Grimaldis and has a rich feudal history.
La Riviera
The Riviera is a spectacular drive, dominated by the towns of Nice, Cannes and Monaco. The Italian border town of Ventimiglia can be reached by motorway in an hour and a half and from there the famous town of St Remo is easily reached.
Les Gorges du Verdon
Known as the Grand Canyon, the Gorges du Verdon is a spectacular day's excursion. Via the Gorges it takes approximately two hours to drive to the emerald blue Lac St Croix, but the small winding roads that rise high above the gorges are breathtaking. The lake can be accessed directly in an hour and a quarter, where a number of activities are proposed (walking, swimming canoeing, rafting). For those not faint at heart, the highest bungey jump in France, from the Pont de l'Artuby above the gorges, can be arranged! Aups is famous for its truffle market (known locally as the black diamond) from November to March.
In the Immediate Vicinity:
Le Mas du Rouquan is situated in the Plaine des Maures (often described locally as 'La Petite Afrique') in the Bois du Rouquan, a protected site famous for its rich flora and fauna (the rare serapias negliigée grows in abundance in our garden!). It is home to the Hermans tortoise, wild boar, badgers and a huge range of other animals, birds and plants. Walking and cycling are very much on the agenda, for lovers of equestrianism Le Domaine des Grands Pins is a stone's throw away, or you can just relax at the side of the pool. Close by are the ancient villages of Les Arcs and La Garde Freinet, the Thoronet Abbey and the town of Lorgues, famous for its fantastic Provençale market.
